DCTribal is still here! We have been heartbroken by the loss of Kaihea, who among others has helped build the strong tribal bellydance community we have here in the DC area. Kaihea was an amazing woman, a dear friend, and we want to continue pursuing her vision of building a community of dance and arts.

After taking some time to heal and recover we are proud to announce that we have a new focus and direction for this year and beyond. Instead of bringing “big name” instructors and producing large concert shows as we have in the past, DCTribal will be planning more community-related events aimed at building friendships and connections between dancers and enthusiasts of all experience levels in our area. Such events include the DCTribal student show and regularly scheduled hafla (party) gatherings. We believe that we no longer have to sponsor master instructors because you, the dancers and performers that comprise our extended dance and arts family, have successfully assumed this important community role.

In the coming year, we look forward to building the DC tribal bellydance and arts community through regular town hall meetings so that you, our fellow dancers and artists, can become personally involved in and aware of events and happenings in the area, as well as holding seasonal haflas (parties) to bring people together to congregate, dance, socialize and build camaraderie. We also look forward to involving more of you in the guidance and work of DCTribal, with its current board of directors–Na’la, Asharah, Mavi, Mab, and Belladonna–serving as mentors, facilitators, and resources. DCTribal is your community and we seek your support and involvement.

You’re invited to bring your ideas to the next DCTribal hafla and town hall meeting on September 26, 2009 at Contradictions Dance Studio, Takoma Park, MD. The town hall meeting will be held between 5:30 and 6:30pm, please come if you would like to offer your talents and skills to DCTribal. The hafla will be from 6:30-8:30pm, and will feature vending, open dancing, and a swap meet.

Come spend time with us and meet your fellow community members.

Getting down at DC Tribal Cafe’s fourth anniversary show! Thank you Jonathan for the super pic!
