Who is DCTribal?
DCTribal is a collective of belly dancers, performers, and artists based in the Washington, DC, area committed to building community and friendships through hosting quality workshops, producing performances featuring established dancers and rising stars, and holding informal dance parties for everyone. Our goal is to promote a non-competitive, non-confrontational environment that welcomes all performers who find inspiration in tribal style belly dance, ethnic and world dance, and their various forms. We are not a troupe of dancers; we are an association of like-minded artists.
History
Tribal belly dance has existed in the DC area for at least a decade, but its devotees were disparate and scattered, only meeting on fleeting occasions. It wasn't until 2004 that a group of dancers, decided to remedy the situation and come together. Mab, just Mab, a pillar of our tribal and alternative performance communities, created the TribalDC discussion group on the networking website tribe.net which began to gain membership among DC's tribal and fusion dancers. At the same time, dancers Marta and Kaihea were also frustrated with the lack of communication and friendship among dancers in the region and created the DCTribal organization with founding members Alexis, Eileen, Natasha, and Sera; they immediately booked the Spark Tour (Ultra Gypsy's Jill Parker and Urban Tribal's Heather Stants), Tribal:Pura (FatChanceBellyDance and Devyani Dance Company's collaborative American Tribal Style project), and world-renowned master instructor Suhaila Salimpour, for sold-out workshops and performances in 2005. The coincidence of these two separate occurrences was the beginning of the DCTribal community, and we've been going strong ever since.
Where We Are Today
We are proud to say that we are an organization by artists for artists, and we have always worked hard to promote a cooperative and friendly environment to support each other and the advancement of our art. Since its inception, DCTribal has hosted a number of world-famous instructors, produced many successful performances, held community-building parties, and helped build a family of dancers in the region, bringing performers and artists together from Maryland to DC to Virginia. Our tribe.net discussion group, now also named DCTribal, is active with lively conversations between dancers and artists of all styles and experience levels. The board members of DCTribal are committed to continuing our tradition of family-building and kinship through dance well into the future.
